Well, first things first….
THING 1:
I owned this orange 1974 Volkswagen Thing (aka Kübelwagen) from 1986 until about 2002.
THING 2:
I bought this 1974 VW Thing in 2004 and still own it…
The VW Thing was imported into the United States for model years 1973 and 1974. The 1973 was noteworthy for its gas heater, which was discontinued for the 1974 version. The 1974 models came equipped with the typical VW heater boxes (as found on the Beetle).
What an amazing thing! Haven’t seen one of them in the UK.

Love The Thing! It looks in excellent condition. Must be fun driving it and getting The Look!

Lots of fun!!! But being an air-cooled VW tin-box, not very practical in the colder weather!!

Tough for a Thing to compete in the UK against Land Rovers!!

So Dr. Suess today with Thing 1 and Thing 2. 🙂 I didn’t have one of these, but I had a ’75 VW Super Beetle that I dearly loved and was a fantastic car. Not a fan of the new ones made in Mexico.

Glad you caught that janet! I had considered weaving a Suessical tale about T1 & T2, but thought it might seem silly…. but when YOU point it out, it is COOL!! I never had a Super Beetle, but had most every other flavor of VW I could get my hands on. Back in 1976 I drove my ’59 Bug from Sterling to downtown Chicago to take my Radio-Telephone Operator’s license test in order to get my license to be a DJ at WIXN radio!! 223 miles round trip on 1 tank of gas and not a single problem 😀

I could take my yellow Beetle most places a 4-wheeler could go and always figured that if I got stuck, I could get about three or four guys to pick the car up and get it out. 🙂 I did love that car and it went many, many miles with me. Only radio in those days and not much to listen to. But at night, I could get some station from Oklahoma (City?) that had good music.

This is a reply to your thoughts from this morning, but had to attach it to your previous one cuz it has no more reply buttons… I spent a summer in the Appalachian Mtns of Virginia (the summer of 1978) doing mission work with the Glenmary priests/brothers. One night I was driving between Big Stone Gap and Pennington Gap in my ’59 Bug and on the AM (tube!) radio I picked up WLS radio out of Chicago… Only time I felt homesick that summer!!

The only Thing I had heard of was in the Adam’s family, but my husband knew all about it, as he has a ‘thing’ for VW’s, particularly beetles and campers. We’ve had a few over the years. Yours look like fun. 🙂

When it comes to memorable characters from ancient American TV shows, you have to give Thing a hand! (sorry Jean… couldn’t resist!!) And bravo for your husband! Looks like he and I could have a long chat about our respective VWs, especially Beetles & vans!!

When our children were young we had an acre of a back garden and they used to drive our off-road VW Beetle around. They had great fun with that one.

That would have been a GREAT time as a kid!!! You just shot up 10 notches on my Admiration For Jean roster!! 🙂 As kids, we actually had an old 1932 Case Farm tractor that we got to putter around on. It had an 8 MPH road gear!! Breath-taking, no?!

I’ve never seen one before – or even heard of them. VW had an endearing knack for producing vehicles that were high on character and low on looks 🙂

The one VW I ALWAYS wanted was the Karmann Ghia Convertible…. But all in all, I think the Thing is cooler!!

Ooooo – the Karmann Ghia!! My landlord in university had one and she generously let me use it on occasion when I needed a vehicle. It was so much fun to drive … especially in the winter with frost on the inside of the windshield – driving with one hand and scraping off ice with the other 🙂

Oh yes, scraping the frost off the inside of the windshield while driving!!! I did that many a time! OMG, you got to drive a KG and not have to pay the repair/upkeep bills! Well done Joanne! plus I am just a teensy tiny bit jealous… sigh

Fun ride! I’ve seen a few of these on the road over the years but with our winters they never really caught on here.
